Trump Introduces ‘Trump-Class’ Battleships

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has revealed plans for a new generation of battleships, dubbed the ‘Golden Fleet,’ which he described as the largest and most powerful warships ever constructed.

During what the White House labeled a “major announcement” at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, Trump confirmed approval for two vessels initially, with ambitions to build as many as 25. He was accompanied by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan.

The ‘Trump-class’ ships, designed to surpass the size of WWII-era Iowa-class battleships, will be equipped with hypersonic missiles, rail guns, and laser weaponry, according to Trump. A media outlet, which first reported the initiative, noted that the US Navy expects to acquire the first vessel by 2030.

“As you know, we’re desperately in need of ships,” Trump remarked. “They’ll be the fastest, the biggest, and by far, 100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built.”

This project forms part of a broader naval expansion strategy that includes both manned and unmanned vessels.

Military officials have cautioned that the US lags behind China in shipbuilding capacity and production. When asked if the new fleet was intended to counter Beijing, Trump avoided naming China directly, saying instead: “It’s a counter to everybody.”

The announcement coincides with heightened US operations in the Caribbean, where the Coast Guard has been intercepting oil tankers linked to Venezuela. Since September, US Navy ships have been deployed to block shipments and target vessels accused of drug trafficking. Caracas has rejected these allegations, accusing Washington of pursuing regime change to exploit Venezuela’s natural resources.
